Hope Floats

August 2, 2017 By Rebekka Lorraine

Lovely event / message from the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce:

HOPE FLOATS
Kayak River of Life

What are you doing at 8:30am on August 10th? We hope you can join us on the banks of the Delaware River at West End Beach in Port Jervis NY as we cheer on breast cancer survivor and advocate, Carolyn Choate as she embarks on a 300 mile river journey for breast cancer awareness, treatment & survival.

We had the pleasure of talking with Carolyn about her trip and encourage all of you to learn more about her fight and the important work of the late cancer researcher Dr. Angela Brody. Carolyn will be leaving the shores of Port Jervis around 9:00am.

Carolyn and her daughter Sydney will kayak 300 miles, while her husband follows on land in the camper taking video footage along the way with the goal of making a documentary about surviving cancer.

Whether you or a loved one has been touched by cancer, or if you want to just stop by to wish Carolyn a great trip, full of hope and adventure…come on down. Follow Kayak River of Life on Facebook !

Geocaching at the Port Jervis Free Library

July 5, 2017 By Rebekka Lorraine

*Press Release

Today’s libraries are not just for books, computers and magazines – the Port Jervis Free Library now has its own geocache! In geocaching, participants obtain the location of a geocache from a geocaching website www.geocaching.com, use a GPS to arrive in the area of the cache, and then follow clues or simply hunt for the cache. There are nearly 500 caches waiting to be found within a 10 mile radius of our library alone!

Libraries and geocaching seem to be made for each other. First, and I believe most importantly, they create a means of uniting the virtual and the real worlds, allowing people to explore both the library building and its resources. Second, they engage people and create community through real life experiences, such as the sudden discovery of a new idea or place that can be transformative. Third, they have a wide appeal across age groups and allow for family or team co-operation and interaction. Come by the Port Jervis Free Library and give the sport of Geocaching a try!

Milford Music Festival Thank You

June 27, 2017 By Rebekka Lorraine

* From: Amy Eisenberg
Executive Director, Milford Presents
Event Coordinator, Milford Music Festival

On behalf of the Milford Presents Board of Directors, I want to thank everyone who participated in Milford Music Festival 2017. Town was full of thousands of people at dozens of performances throughout our 3-day festival: from Apple Valley to Belle Reve along Harford Street, the Jorgenson’s Block Party at the Historic Dimmick Inn to the Farmers Market at the Columns Museum on Broad Street, kicking off with a Blues Jam at the Waterwheel Cafe on Thursday night and including wonderful tie-in events at the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches. We enjoyed the first weekend of summer song after delightful song thanks to our 30 presenting businesses and the musicians that they each selected to perform. I hope that you’ll make the time to stop by these establishments to thank these folks this season; free community events of this quality are impossible without them.

Wondering what’s next? Please visit the Milford Presents website at www.MilfordPA.us for Milford’s event calendar which includes the Milford Garden Club’s Secret Garden Tour on July 15th, Kindred Spirits Classical Music Celebration on August 5th, the Festival of Wood at Grey Towers on August 5 & 6th as well as Septemberfest, Milford Presents’ next music festival, in the works for September 9th.
Thank you for helping to make Milford the place to be: a better place to live, work and play.

Orange County’s Farmer Market

June 13, 2017 By Rebekka Lorraine

Neuhaus encourages residents to take advantage of Orange County’s farmers markets this summer

*Press Release from Orange County Government

WYNY 1069
Talitha and Dan Jones, owners of Edgwick Farm in Cornwall, with Orange County Executive
Steven M. Neuhaus at the Goshen Farmers Market.

Farmers markets offer fresh local fruits and vegetables

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus reminds residents that the County’s summer farmers markets will be open through October.

There are 14 summer farmers markets in Orange County.

“Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support the local economy,” Neuhaus said. “These markets are important to our farming families and provide us with fresh, healthy produce, helping to ensure a sustainable Orange County. I hope residents will continue to support our local farm stands and markets this summer. It’s a great way to eat healthy and meet our neighbors who are growing the produce that we put on our tables for our families.”

Orange County’s farmers markets offer local fruits and vegetables, along with prepared foods, wine, honey, flowers, and everything from meats to quiche. Each market has its own individual character with unique offerings and vendors who take pride in their homegrown products. For a full listing of Orange County farms and farmers markets, visit orangecountygov.com/agriculture or call 615-3840.

“You won’t just find produce at our farmers markets,” said Orange County Tourism Coordinator Susan Hawvermale. “You’ll find a unique cultural experience in a relaxed setting with friendly people. They’ll even give you tips and ideas on ways to cook all the products they sell.”

Farmers markets support a $100 million dollar agricultural industry in Orange County, stimulating the local economy and creating jobs. Approximately 16 percent of the county’s land is farmland and over 10,000 acres are in vegetable production, which is the third largest in the state.

“We encourage residents to support our local farmers at a farmers market or farm near you,” said David Church, Orange County’s Commissioner of Planning. “Everyone benefits when you purchase food picked at the peak of freshness and produced by a local farm.”

For more information, contact Justin Rodriguez, Assistant to the County Executive for Communications and Media Relations at 845.291.3255 or jrodriguez@orangecountygov.com.

The Week of the Young Child celebrated in Port Jervis

April 25, 2017 By Rebekka Lorraine

Local Interest Article courtesy of St.Mary’s Little Lambs:
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood education association.  This year the Week of the Young Child was celebrated April 24th-29th.

Fun theme days and marching in a parade were the highlights of this year’s Week of the Young Child for the children at St. Mary’s Little Lambs in Port Jervis.  On Monday, April 24th the school marched in the annual Port Jervis Week of the Young Child Parade, along with the children from Candy Cane Preschool.  Approximately, 75 children and adults marched through the streets of Port Jervis to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Port Jervis Youth Detective Scott Robertson stopped at intervals along the parade route to instruct the children on safety rules.

After the parade, “Officer Scott” gave the children a tour of the police department and gave them a tour of a police car and the Port Jervis Police Department UTV.
